The Sphinx by the Stream
Lily loved the old stream behind her house. Every afternoon, she'd sit on the mossy bank and watch the water dance over smooth stones. The water whispered secrets as it flowed, and Lily always listened.
One day, something extraordinary happened. As Lily peeked through the tall grass to watch the dragonflies, she saw a pair of golden eyes glowing among the reeds. She held her breath, heart pounding like a little drum. Was she a spy now, watching something magical?
The eyes belonged to a sphinx — not a scary one with sharp claws, but a gentle creature with the body of a lion and the face of someone kind and ancient. His fur shimmered like sunset, and his wings were folded neatly like a blanket.
"I've been waiting for someone special to find me," the sphinx said, his voice warm like honey tea. "I am Finn, and I guard this stream."
Lily's fear melted away. "I'm Lily. Are you... real?"
Finn smiled. "As real as friendship and magic. Would you like to see what I protect?"
He spread his magnificent wings, revealing a hidden cave behind the waterfall. Inside, crystals glowed in every color imaginable. But most amazing of all were tiny creatures — water sprites, playful spirits who splashed and giggled.
"They're my friends," Finn explained. "But they're shy. They needed someone kind and patient to visit them."
From that day on, Lily visited Finn and the water sprites every afternoon. She learned that being a spy wasn't about sneaking — it was about discovering wonderful secrets and sharing them only with those who would treasure them.
And the best secret of all? The sphinx by the stream was her friend, teaching her that magic lives everywhere, especially where water flows and hearts are open.
