The Sphinx by the Pool

The courtyard pool shimmered like liquid turquoise beneath the midday sun, but Elena couldn't bring herself to look at it. Not after last night. Not after Marcus had confessed his affair in this exact spot, while she'd been nursing her third martini and pretending everything was fine.

She pressed her palm against the cool surface of the hotel room window, watching him down by the water now, laughing at something his assistant said. The same assistant. The irony tasted bitter.

They were supposed to be celebrating their tenth anniversary at this exclusive resort in Mexico. Instead, Elena was trapped in a room she'd requested to escape, feeling like the sphinx sculpture that guarded the pool—stoic, silent, guarding secrets she wasn't sure she wanted to voice.

"What do you want me to say?" she'd asked him last night, when he'd finally told her the truth.

"That we can work through this," he'd pleaded. "That ten years means something."

It did mean something. But did it mean enough?

The hotel had placed a small glass bowl with two goldfish on their nightstand as a romantic gesture. Elena had watched them circling each other endlessly in the cramped space, beautiful and doomed, never quite touching, never free. Just like them, she realized.

She opened her handbag and pulled out the divorce papers she'd secretly printed before their trip. She'd known. She'd always known, somewhere deep in her gut. Maybe that's why she'd agreed to come here—she needed to see it for herself, needed to hear him say the words.

Marcus looked up at their window then, shielding his eyes against the glare. Elena didn't move. She stayed perfectly still, like the sphinx below, riddle unanswered, secrets intact. The goldfish swam in their endless circles, and somewhere beyond the courtyard, the ocean crashed against the shore, indifferent to everything.
