The Sphinx by the Pool

The water in the hotel pool was impossibly blue, the kind of artificial cerulean that made you think of corporate brochures and vacation packages that never deliver what they promise. Elena swam laps at midnight, her arms cutting through the chlorinated silence, counting strokes like she used to count the days until she could escape.

"You're still swimming?" The voice came from the darkness beyond the pool lights. The man stepped into view—a silhouette she recognized immediately. Marcus, the sphinx of the twenty-third floor. The man who never gave a straight answer, whose riddles had cost half the department their jobs when the pyramid scheme collapsed last spring.

Elena treaded water, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I could ask you the same thing."

Marcus sat on the edge of the pool, his legs dangling into the water. "I'm not swimming. I'm thinking."

"About what? How many lives you ruined?"

"About how you were the only one who saw it coming," he said quietly. "The emails. The offshore accounts. You tried to warn them."

Elena stopped swimming. The water lapped against her shoulders. "And you let them fire me for it."

"I had to protect my family."

The pool lights flickered. In that moment, Elena understood something about adulthood she'd been too naive to grasp before—there were no heroes, only people making impossible choices in impossible situations. The sphinx hadn't been testing her with riddles. He'd been surviving, just like her.

She swam to the edge and pulled herself up, water streaming from her skin. Marcus didn't move. The pyramid of their former company rose beyond the hotel windows, its glass facade catching moonlight like a tombstone for careers that died there.

"I got a new job," Elena said. "They didn't ask about why I left."

Marcus nodded. Something like relief crossed his face. "Good."

She picked up her towel. "Goodnight, Marcus."

"Goodnight, Elena."

She walked back to her room, leaving the sphinx alone by the pool with his secrets and his survival, both of them drowning in different ways, both of them finally swimming toward something like shore.
