The Sphinx by the Pool

Maya found me at the corporate retreat, sitting by the infinity pool at sunset, nursing a gin and tonic like it was oxygen. I'd been running from the truth all week: my department was being downsized, and I was the designated sacrifice.

"You look like a zombie," she said, sliding onto the lounge chair beside me. She was wearing that ridiculous fedora hat she'd insisted on bringing to Phoenix, a middle finger to the desert heat.

"I feel like one," I admitted. "The merger announcement tomorrow—it's going to be a bloodbath."

Maya's hand found mine, her thumb tracing circles on my palm. We'd been dancing around each other for months, a slow burn of late-night emails and lingering glances across conference room tables. Now, with everything collapsing, the timing felt cosmically wrong.

"What would you do if you could walk away?" she asked.

The question hit like a riddle from some ancient sphinx—cryptic, impossible, demanding an answer I didn't have. I watched the pool's surface ripple in the wind, thinking about mortgages, about the resume I hadn't updated in seven years, about the terrifying freedom of having nothing left to lose.

"I'd buy that old bookstore in Denver," I said finally. "The one with the cat in the window."

Maya smiled, and for the first time all week, I didn't feel like I was dying. "The sphinx speaks," she whispered. "Truth destroys the monster."

The next morning, I didn't go to the announcement meeting. I packed my bag, left my key card on the desk, and drove north with Maya beside me, that ridiculous hat on her head and our whole lives ahead of us.
