The Sphinx by the Pool

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her solo cup like a lifeline. The entire sophomore class seemed to be here, splashing and screaming while she mentally cataloged every social interaction like it was intelligence data. That's what being the new girl did to you — turned you into a spy in your own life.

"You look like you're solving the mysteries of the universe," said a voice behind her.

Maya jumped. It was Jordan, the girl with the silver hair who always sat in the back of AP History. They'd never actually spoken.

"Just observing," Maya said. "Research."

Jordan laughed. "Cool. Can I join your mission?"

They ended up perched on the diving board, watching the party unfold below like it was reality TV. Jordan pointed out who was faking their Instagram-perfect friendship, who'd had a dramatic breakup at last week's football game, and why the pool itself was basically a social sphinx — mysterious and potentially deadly to anyone who messed up the hierarchy.

"That's deep," Maya said, actually meaning it.

"I'm deep like a puddle," Jordan shrugged. "Hey, you want to get out of here? There's a diner down the street. They have milkshakes that'll change your life."

Maya hesitated. Her mom had told her to make friends. This was a friend offering, right?

"Let me guess," Jordan said. "You're worried this is weird. Random. Not how people do things."

"Is it?"

"Everything's weird when you're fifteen. Might as well embrace it." Jordan stood up on the diving board. "Also, I'm kind of starving and you seem like someone who appreciates good milkshake philosophy."

Maya smiled. "I do appreciate milkshake philosophy."

"Then mission accepted. C'mon, before they start playing slow songs and it gets even more awkward."

As they walked away from the splashing chaos, Maya realized she wasn't spying anymore. She was finally living it. The sphinx had been solved, and the answer was simpler than she'd thought: just say yes to the milkshake invitation.
