The Sphinx by the Pool

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like it could somehow protect her from the sea of sophomore bodies slick with chlorine and pretension. This was exactly why she'd spent the first month of school being invisible. Pool parties were basically social minefields dressed up as fun.

Then there was Kai.

Everyone called them the Sphinx because they were beautiful in that way that made you forget how to form sentences, and they never seemed to say anything. Just watched everything with those dark, knowing eyes while the rest of them performed their little social dances.

Maya caught Kai watching her and immediately looked away, face burning. Of course. The one time she actually got noticed, it was by the person whose approval she wanted least and feared most.

"You gonna stand there all night or what?" It was Becca, shining wet and perfect in a bikini that probably cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe. "The pool's not gonna bite."

Maya forced a smile. "Just warming up."

"Suit yourself." Becca flipped her hair and dove in, creating a splash that felt like judgment.

Maya couldn't bear it. The watching, the waiting, the feeling that everyone was sizing her up and finding her wanting. She was done being the quiet new girl who didn't belong.

She dropped her towel on the lounge chair and walked to the pool's edge. Something in her chest loosened. Whatever happened, at least she wasn't standing still anymore.

The water was cold against her ankles, then her knees, then her waist. When she surfaced, gasping, Kai was still watching from the corner of the patio. But this time, Maya didn't look away. She met those dark eyes and held them.

And the Sphinx smiled.

It was small, barely there, but it was real. Maybe that was the whole riddle all along — not figuring out how to belong, but finding the courage to just be there.
