The Sphinx Behind the Screen

Maya stared at the glowing cable box, its blue light the only illumination in her basement room. Another Friday night scrolling through endless feeds while her "friends" posted about parties she wasn't invited to. Again.

Then she found it—the Sphinx Channel. Some weird livestream where a hooded figure asked riddles instead of playing music. The chat moved fast, everyone trying to solve the puzzle. Something about it felt... real.

"What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?"

Maya typed: "A human." The chat exploded. Someone DM'd her: "not bad for a newbie. u good at this?"

That's how she met Alex. They spent hours solving riddles, trading theories, barely noticing the time. He was funny, smart, and actually listened when she talked about feeling invisible at school.

"wear something iconic tomorrow," he dared her. "for courage."

Maya dug through her closet and found her grandma's vintage fedora. She felt ridiculous wearing it to school, but something shifted. People noticed. Even asked about the hat.

"cool vibe," someone actually said to her.

The Sphinx announced a meetup at the old arcade downtown. Maya's hands trembled as she got ready. Hat on. Heart racing.

She walked in and there he was—Alex from the chat. Wearing the exact same fedora.

"No way," he laughed, pointing at her head. "That's actually iconic."

"You too," Maya smiled, her voice steadier than she expected.

They spent hours playing vintage games, talking about everything and nothing. Alex admitted he used to be the quiet kid who never spoke up.

"the sphinx taught me something," he said. "riddles aren't about the answer. they're about how you think."

Maya looked at her reflection in the arcade window. The hat. The new friend. The version of herself she was becoming.

"Maybe that's the real riddle," she said. "figuring out who you are."

Alex grinned. "well, you're definitely not invisible anymore."

The Sphinx channel stayed active that night. A new riddle appeared. But Maya didn't need it anymore. She'd already found the answer she was looking for.
