The Sphinx Bears Witness

sphinxbearspy

Elena had been a spy for fifteen years, but the riddle sitting across from her was unlike anything she'd encountered in the field. The man called himself only Sphinx—a corporate fixer who dealt in secrets the way dealers dealt in diamonds. His office overlooked Chicago, the gray November rain streaking the floor-to-ceiling glass like tears he refused to cry.

"Your husband," Sphinx said, his voice smooth and terrible, "has been selling your division's patents to competitors for three years."

Elena's fingers tightened around her whiskey glass. She'd borne many burdens in her life—sleepless nights in safe houses, the weight of lives lost due to her intelligence, the hollow ache of lonely hotel rooms. But this? This was different.

"How do you bear it?" she whispered. "Knowing everything?"

Sphinx's thin lips curved into something that might have been a smile. "The question isn't how I bear it. It's what you'll do now that you know."

She'd suspected for months. The late nights. The encrypted drives. The way Marcus avoided her eyes when she asked about work. A spy's intuition was rarely wrong, but proof was currency, and Sphinx dealt only in truth.

"What do you want?" she asked.

"Your husband's client list. In exchange, I give you everything—a paper trail, offshore accounts, the name of the broker in Zurich. You burn him, or you join him. Those are your riddles, Elena. Solve them."

She walked home through the rain, the wet bearing down on her like a physical weight. Marcus was asleep when she let herself into their brownstone, his breathing even and innocent in the half-light. Fifteen years of gathering intelligence, and she'd never spied on the one person who mattered most.

The Sphinx bore witness to many things. But tonight, he'd simply witnessed the moment Elena decided which side of the line she'd finally choose to stand on.

She opened her laptop. The encryption key Marcus used was one she'd taught him herself. Some secrets, after all, were meant to be found.
