The Sphinx at Willow Pond

Lily loved exploring behind her house, especially on sunny Saturday mornings. Today, she followed a path she'd never noticed before, winding through tall grass until she reached a hidden pond she didn't know existed.

In the center of the pond sat a tiny island, and on that island perched the smallest sphinx Lily had ever seen—no bigger than a cat, with soft golden fur and wise amber eyes. But this sphinx looked sad, tangled in something thick and black.

Lily waded into the cool water, which only reached her knees. "Are you okay?" she called gently.

The sphinx's ears perked up. "I've been stuck here for three hundred years," it said in a voice like chimes. "A fisherman left his cable here, and it wrapped around my front paw. I can't move!"

Lily reached the island and carefully unwound the heavy cable from the sphinx's leg. As soon as it was free, the sphinx stretched and did a joyful spin.

"Thank you, kind human! I am Cleo, guardian of magical wishes."

Lily's eyes widened. "Magical wishes?"

"But I can only grant wishes to someone who brings a friend to share them with," Cleo explained. "Friendship makes wishes stronger."

Lily thought immediately of Maya, her best friend who lived next door. She ran home as fast as her feet could fly and returned with Maya, whose dark curls bounced with every step.

"A real sphinx?!" Maya gasped.

Cleo smiled. "You helped me when I was stuck. Now I will help you. But remember—the best wishes are the ones you make come true yourself. I can only give you courage and creativity."

Lily and Maya looked at each other and grinned. They didn't need magic wishes—they had each other, and they had big dreams of building a treehouse where all the neighborhood kids could play.

"We wish for the confidence to build something amazing together," Lily said.

"And friendship to last forever," Maya added.

Celo's wings shimmered with gold dust. "Those wishes already came true the moment you became friends. But here's a little sparkle to help you remember what matters most."

She sprinkled golden dust over both girls. They felt warm and happy, like drinking hot cocoa on a snowy day.

Every summer after that, Lily and Maya built their treehouse together. And sometimes, just sometimes, they visited Cleo at Willow Pond, bringing new friends to meet the magical sphinx who taught them that the best magic of all is kindness, friendship, and working together to make dreams come true.
