The Sphinx at the Swimming Pool
Lily pushed open the gate to the community swimming pool, her towel slung over one shoulder. It was a hot summer day, perfect for splashing in the cool blue water. But as she rounded the corner toward the pool, she stopped in her tracks.
There, perched on the high diving board like it was a royal throne, sat a golden sphinx. Its lion body gleamed in the sunlight, while its human face watched her with wise, twinkling eyes. Beside the sphinx lay a small fluffy dog, wagging its tail happily.
"Welcome, young swimmer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like ruffling feathers. "I am Sophie, and this is my companion, Barnaby the dog. We've been waiting for someone brave enough to answer my riddle."
Lily's eyes widened. "A real sphinx? At the swimming pool?"
"We go where adventure calls us," Sophie replied mysteriously. "Now, are you ready?"
Barnaby barked enthusiastically as if urging her on.
"I'm ready!" Lily said, clutching her towel tighter.
"Excellent," Sophie said. "Here is my riddle: I have keys but no locks. I have a space but no room. You can enter, but never go outside. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. She looked around the pool area. Her gaze landed on the padel court next door, where people were hitting balls back and forth. But that wasn't it.
Keys... locks... space... room...
Suddenly, she gasped. "A keyboard!"
Sophie's face broke into a brilliant smile. "Correct! You are clever and kind-hearted—I can see it in you."
The sphinx raised a paw, and suddenly, Lily's swimming bag filled with golden coins that shimmered like sunlight on water.
"Use these well," Sophie said. "True wealth isn't measured in coins, but in courage and kindness."
As suddenly as they appeared, Sophie and Barnaby faded like mist. Lily stood alone by the pool, her heart racing with wonder. But in her bag, the golden coins remained—real magic from a magical friend.
That day, Lily learned that adventures can happen anywhere, even at the swimming pool, and that kindness and courage are the greatest treasures of all.
