The Sphinx at the Swimming Pool

Lily loved summer days at the pool. She'd swim until her fingers wrinkled, then rest on the lounge chair, playing games on her iPhone while her toes dangled in the warm water.

One Tuesday, something peculiar happened. Lily's iPhone screen flickered and showed not her usual game, but a message in glowing letters: 'LOOK BEYOND.' Puzzled, she glanced up—and gasped.

By the pool's edge sat a creature she'd only seen in books: a sphinx. But this sphinx wasn't made of stone. She had golden fur that sparkled like sunshine, wise amber eyes, and enormous wings folded neatly against her body.

'I am Cleopatra,' the sphinx said gently. 'I've waited centuries for someone brave enough to see me.'

Lily's heart raced. 'Are you... real?'

'Touch my paw and find out.'

Lily reached out. The sphinx's fur was warm and soft, like a kitten but larger, much larger. 'May I be your friend?' the sphinx asked hopefully. 'But I should warn you—I'm terribly lonely because everyone runs away.'

Lily smiled. 'I won't run away. But can you play padel?' She pointed at the padel court nearby.

The sphinx's eyes lit up. 'I've ALWAYS wanted to learn!'

Lily taught her new friend how to hold the racquet, how to serve the ball, and how to laugh when you miss. They played until sunset, the sphinx's wings fluttering with joy every time she hit the ball.

As stars appeared above, the sphinx grew transparent. 'I must return to my statue now,' she said sadly. 'But thank you for the most magical day.'

'Come back tomorrow!' Lily called. 'We can practice your backhand.'

The sphinx nodded, fading into moonlight. 'I'll be here. Waiting for my friend.'

Lily walked home clutching her iPhone, its screen dark now, but her heart full. She'd learned something wonderful: sometimes the best adventures come from looking up from your screen and seeing the magic right in front of you.
