The Sphinx at the Pool's Edge

Luna was bored. It was the hottest day of summer vacation, and her blue plastic **pool** sat sparkling in the backyard like a giant pudding bowl. She dipped her toes in the cool water and sighed.

Something orange flashed beneath the surface.

A tiny **goldfish** swam right up to her toe and spoke in a bubbly voice. "Hello, Luna! I'm Finnegan. Will you help me?"

Luna's eyes went wide as dinner plates. "You can talk?"

Finnegan did a joyful little flip. "Of course! I'm actually a magical goldfish, enchanted to protect the Portal Pool. But something terrible happened! Someone cut the magic **cable** that connects our worlds. The Pool Kingdom is fading away!"

"What can I do?" Luna asked, her heart pounding with adventure.

"Brave question!" Finnegan bubbled with excitement. "At the bottom of this pool lives the ancient Pool **Sphinx**. She guards the magic that can reconnect the cable. But first, you must answer her riddle!"

Luna grabbed her pink **padel** racquet from the grass, thinking it might make her feel braver. "I'm ready!"

She took a deep breath and plunged into the shimmering water. Amazingly, she could breathe underwater! Bubbles floated up like tiny jellyfish. At the bottom sat a beautiful sphinx made entirely of pearls and coral, with eyes like swimming pool reflections.

"Welcome, brave one," the Sphinx purred gently. "Here is your riddle: I have no voice, but I tell stories. I have no face, but I show reflections. I have no doors, but you can dive into me. What am I?"

Luna thought hard. She remembered how the pool showed her face every morning, and how she imagined entire oceans beneath its surface.

"A **pool**!" she cried out.

The Sphinx smiled, and her pearl cheeks glowed warm. "Correct! You are clever and kind—the perfect combination." She touched Luna's forehead with a sparkling fin. "The magic cable is restored. Finnegan can now visit whenever you like."

Luna surfaced, spluttering happily. The goldfish swam beside her, glowing golden.

"We did it!" Luna cheered, hugging her wet knees.

Finnegan winked. "Friendship is the strongest magic of all, Luna. Remember that."

That night, Luna fell asleep dreaming of underwater kingdoms and riddle-solving adventures, knowing her new friend was just a splash away. And sometimes, just sometimes, she spotted a tiny orange fish dancing in the moonlight reflections of her pool.
