The Sphinx at the Pool
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. Two weeks in this new town and she still felt like an outsider, her curly hair an uncooperative halo around her face. The country club shimmered with impossible perfection—teens in expensive swimsuits, laughter bouncing off the tiles, and there, right by the deep end, the legendary Sphinx statue that everyone at school whispered about.
"You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?"
Maya jumped. It was Leo from her history class, dripping wet and grinning. Before she could answer, a racquet came flying toward them.
"Padel! Who's up?" someone yelled from the adjacent court.
"That's me," Leo said, but instead of leaving, he held out a hand. "Unless you'd rather conquer the Sphinx first?"
"What?"
"Local tradition." Leo lowered his voice dramatically. "Every summer, you have to touch the Sphinx's nose and make a wish. But only at sunset. It's supposed to be, like, actually magic."
Maya's heart raced. This was it—the moment she could either stay invisible or actually become part of something.
"My hair's a mess," she admitted suddenly. "I got the worst haircut right before we moved."
Leo shrugged. "So? It's got personality. Unlike Chase over there." He pointed at a guy whose hair was gelled into submission. "Besides, the Sphinx doesn't care about hair. The Sphinx cares about courage."
The sun began to dip, casting golden light across the water. Maya found herself moving toward the statue, her bare feet silent on the concrete. The other kids watched, some curious, some amused. She reached out, fingers trembling, and touched the stone nose.
*I wish to belong here.*
When she turned around, Leo was cheering. A few others joined in. Chase from the gel-hair camp rolled his eyes, but for the first time, Maya didn't care. The pool sparkled behind her, full of possibility, and her curls—they were just curls, wild and free, exactly as they should be.
"So," Leo said, "you up for padel tomorrow? I suck, but I promise to make you look pro."
Maya smiled, genuine and terrified and hopeful all at once. "Absolutely."
