The Sphinx at the Pool
The water in the pool was still, untouched at 3 AM - the hour when ghosts and corporate spies came out to think. Elena sat on the concrete edge, her legs submerged, nursing a whiskey she'd stolen from her ex-husband's cabinet. She was thirty-four and already felt like a zombie, hollowed out by five years of leaking trade secrets to the competition, each paycheck a little death of the soul.
She heard footsteps and didn't turn. "Mind if I join?"
His name was Marcus, the new senior VP - her target for the next quarter. He sat beside her, fully dressed in his suit, looking like a man who couldn't bear the weight of every bad decision he'd ever made.
"The water's cold," she said.
"Everything is lately."
They sat in silence until Marcus spoke again. "You know what the sphinx really asked?"
Elena turned to him. In the moonlight, his face was worn, haunted. "What?"
"'What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, three in the evening?' The answer isn't man. It's compromise. We start crawling, then we stand tall, then we lean on all the bullshit we've created."
He looked at her then, really looked at her, and she felt herself seen in a way that terrified her.
"I know who you are," he said softly. "Corporate security ran a background check. But I also know you're good at what you do because you're desperate. And desperate people make mistakes."
Elena's heart hammered.
"I'm not going to report you," Marcus continued. "I'm going to make you an offer. Come work for us. For real this time. No more games."
"Why?"
"Because I'm tired of being a zombie too. And I think together we might figure out how to be alive again."
She watched the water ripple around her legs. The irony struck her - she'd spent years swimming in lies, and here was truth, drowning her in options.
"Okay," she said. "But you're buying the next round of whiskey."
Marcus laughed, and it was the most genuine sound she'd heard in years.
The pool remained still, but something inside Elena had finally begun to move.
