The Sphinx at the Lightning Pool

Emma loved visiting her grandmother's old pool in the backyard. It had been there forever, with tiles that shimmered like tiny stars. But during summer storms, something magical happened.

One rainy afternoon, lightning flashed across the sky like golden cracks opening in a treasure chest. Emma peeked through the window at the pool. Raindrops danced on its surface, making ripples that glowed with mysterious light.

"Come closer," a voice whispered.

Emma stepped outside. There, perched on the diving board, sat a small sphinx. It had the body of a golden cat and the face of a wise child, with wings that sparkled like morning dew.

"I'm Leo," the sphinx said. "I appear only when lightning dances."

Emma wasn't scared. She felt like she'd been waiting her whole life to meet him. "I'm Emma."

"Will you be my friend?" Leo asked. "I've been lonely for so many storms."

Emma nodded. Together, they spent the afternoon running through puddles, chasing lightning bugs, and sliding down rainbows that appeared only for moments. Leo showed her how to call the wind and make raindrops sing.

"Why do you only come during storms?" Emma asked.

"Because that's when magic is strongest," Leo explained. "But real friendship doesn't need magic. It needs heart."

As the storm passed, Leo's wings began to fade. "I must go now. But remember, Emma — the bravest thing is having an open heart."

"Will I see you again?" Emma called.

"Whenever lightning strikes, think of me, and I'll be there."

Emma waved until Leo disappeared like morning mist. Later, when her grandmother asked why she was dancing in the rain, Emma just smiled.

Some treasures aren't meant to be kept. They're meant to be remembered. And every storm since, Emma watches the lightning and whispers to her friend the sphinx, knowing that magic and friendship can be found in the most unexpected places.
