The Sphinx at the Deep End

Marcus pulled his fedora down lower, the brim shielding eyes that refused to meet anyone's. Last year's mistake—wearing this hat to Jordan's pool party—still haunted his group chat history. Someone had unearthed the screenshot yesterday. Again.

"Yo, Hat Guy!" Maya called from the deep end, splashing water everywhere. "Papaya's ready!"

Marcus groaned internally. His aunt's tropical fruit obsession had become the party's running joke. That papaya salad sat on the patio table like a neon orange monument to his social awkwardness.

"Nah, I'm good," he mumbled, starting for the gate. Maybe running away wasn't mature, but staying wasn't an option.

"Wait." Jordan appeared behind him, wet hair dripping. "You're just gonna dip?"

Marcus's chest tightened. The sphinx of teenage social dynamics—answer correctly or get eaten alive. Jordan was cool. Jordan was popular. Jordan was currently blocking his escape route.

"Just... gotta go."

"Stay." Jordan gestured toward the pool. "Nobody cares about the hat thing, Marcus. That was like, three group chat eras ago. We just want you in the pool."

Before Marcus could process, Maya's voice cut through: "LAST ONE TO THE OTHER SIDE IS A—"

Jordan shoved him, laughing.

Marcus hit the water mid-sentence, swimming upward through chlorine and shock. When he broke the surface, sputtering, everyone was laughing with him, not at him. Even without the hat—which was currently floating toward the deep end like a tiny fedora-shaped boat—he felt something shift.

"Your hat's doing better than you," Jordan teased.

Marcus flipped them off. They both knew he'd be back next weekend.

The sphinx had been defeated. Or maybe, finally, understood.
