The Sphinx at the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The summer bash was in full swing—music thumping, laughter bouncing off the concrete walls, people cannonballing into the water. And there she was, in her oversized **hat**, the one she'd worn every day since seventh grade because bad hair days were eternal when you had curls like hers.

"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the water, flicking droplets her way. Maya's stomach did that familiar flip. Jordan was gorgeous, confident, everything Maya wasn't.

She was about to bail when she noticed it: a plastic **sphinx** statue someone had dragged from the garden and perched on a diving board. Its painted-on eyes seemed to mock her. *Answer me this,* it seemed to say. *What's scarier: jumping in, or standing on the edge forever?*

"I look like a **zombie**," Maya muttered. She'd stayed up until 4 AM doom-scrolling, caught in that spiral of comparing herself to everyone else's supposedly perfect life. Dark circles, existential dread, the whole package.

Jordan swam over, resting arms on the pool edge. "Rough night?"

"You could say that." Maya adjusted her hat self-consciously.

"Same. My parents are doing the whole 'we're separating but we're still friends' thing and it's exhausting." Jordan's voice cracked just enough.

Maya blinked. Jordan, who seemed to have it together? Jordan, whose Instagram was basically a highlights reel of perfect moments?

"I've been **swimming** laps all summer trying to zone it out," Jordan continued. "But sometimes you just need to stop running, you know?"

Something shifted. Maya took off her hat, letting her curls spring free. "Yeah. I do know."

She jumped.

The shock of cold water was like hitting reset. Surfacing sputtering, she found Jordan grinning.

"Took you long enough."

The sphinx watched from its diving board throne, satisfied. The riddle wasn't about perfection. It was about jumping anyway.
