The Sphinx at the Arcade
Maya's palm was sweating. Again. She wiped it on her jeans—third time in five minutes—and gripped her phone like it was a lifeline. The cable dangling from the charging station beside her had three minutes left. Just like her confidence.
"You're gonna do great," said Jada, her best friend since sixth grade, adjusting her hair in the mirror of the compact she always carried. "You literally know everything about Greek mythology. This is your moment."
They were at The Wreck, the arcade where everyone hung out on Friday nights. Tonight was the trivia tournament, and somehow—somehow—Jada had convinced Maya to sign up.
Maya's hair kept falling in her face. She tucked it behind her ear, then immediately let it fall back. Hair down was safer. Hair down was armor. Hair down meant she could hide behind it when things got awkward.
"Next up: Maya versus... The Sphinx," announced Derek, the senior who'd been working there since forever. He pointed to the massive arcade game in the corner—the one shaped like an ancient Egyptian statue with glowing eyes. "For the mythology round."
The Sphinx game. The one nobody ever beat.
Maya's palm sweated harder. She could feel everyone watching—Caleb from her English class, the juniors who sat at the popular table, even that quiet sophomore who always wore headphones. She'd practiced trivia questions for weeks. But standing there, with the Sphinx's LED eyes blinking at her like it knew exactly how nervous she was...
"First question," the Sphinx's electronic voice rumbled. "What creature had the head of a human, body of a lion, and wings of an eagle?"
Maya froze. This was basic. Elementary. Her brain went blank like someone had pressed a reset button.
"Time starts—now."
Jada mouthed something from the sidelines. Maya couldn't read it, but she caught her friend's desperate energy. Do it for you. Not for them.
"The Sphinx itself," Maya said, her voice barely above a whisper. Then louder: "The original Sphinx. Before it was the one who asked riddles. That was its form. Human-headed lion with eagle wings."
"Correct," the game announced. "Next—"
Maya answered the next one. And the next. Her palm stopped sweating. Her hair stayed out of her face. She wasn't hiding anymore. She was just... there. In it. Winning.
When she finally walked away from the Sphinx, trophy clutched in her hand, Jada tackled her in a hug so hard Maya's phone's cable finally gave up and died completely.
"You were legendary!" Jada screamed. Everyone was looking—but not like they were judging. Like they were impressed. Even Caleb nodded at her, actual respect in his eyes.
Maya looked back at the Sphinx, its eyes still glowing. She'd faced it. She'd beaten it. And somewhere in that arcade, beneath the neon lights and friendship bracelets and ancient game machine magic, she'd found something better than victory.
She'd found herself—no armor needed.
