The Sphinx at Sunset

Marcus stood on the padel court, sweat dripping down his spine as his business partner smashed the ball past him. They were in Cancún for some corporate wellness retreat—pyramid scheme masquerading as professional development. The vitamin packets in his pocket crinkled with every movement; Sarah had packed them, still trying to optimize him even as their marriage hollowed out.

'You're playing like a zombie today, man,' Raj called out, grinning. His teeth were too white. Everything about this trip was too bright, too curated.

Marcus didn't answer. He couldn't stop thinking about last night, how Sarah had looked at him across the candlelit table—those eyes, ancient and inscrutable as a sphinx, asking questions she already knew the answers to. When did you stop loving me? When did you start staying late at the office not for work, but because you couldn't bear to come home?

He'd deflected, as always. Made jokes. Poured more wine.

Now the sun was setting over the resort's faux-Mayan architecture, casting long shadows across the court. The pyramid-shaped hotel loomed above them like a tombstone. Marcus thought about the vitamins—B-complex for energy, D for mood, omega-3 for a brain that felt increasingly foggy. Pill bottles lined their bathroom counter like pharmaceutical evidence of a life slowly falling apart.

'Game point,' Raj said.

Marcus watched the ball arc toward him, a bright yellow sphere against the deepening purple sky. He didn't swing. Just let it bounce past, touching his pocket again where the vitamins were, where his phone was with three unread messages from Sarah.

'Shit, you okay?' Raj asked, stepping forward.

Marcus looked up at the pyramid, then toward the ocean where the real sphinx waited—the one inside him, the one that had been asking riddles he refused to answer for years. The ball rolled to a stop at his feet.

'No,' Marcus said, surprising himself. 'I really don't think I am.'
