The Sphinx at Sarah's Pool Party
I was literally *running* late to Sarah's pool party—again. My hair was a mess, my swimsuit was two years old, and my social anxiety was doing backflips. But I had to go. Everyone would be there, including him.
When I finally arrived, phone glued to my hand like a lifeline, the backyard was already buzzing. I spotted him immediately—Jake, leaning against the fence with that effortless cool that made my stomach do gymnastics. I pulled out my iPhone, pretending to check nonexistent messages. Classic avoidance tactic.
"Hey! You made it!" Sarah called, waving me toward the pool. "We're playing truth or dare. But you have to sit on the Sphinx."
I stared. In the middle of the pool floated this ridiculous inflatable sphinx—gold body, human face, wing-like things spreading across the water. It looked like something from a weird dream.
"No way," I laughed, but someone pushed me toward the pool.
Next thing I knew, I was *swimming* toward this absurd creature, water streaming down my face. I climbed onto the sphinx, feeling ridiculous and exposed. Everyone watched.
"Truth or dare?" Jake called from the edge. Our eyes met.
"Dare," I said before I could overthink it.
He grinned. "I dare you to cannonball off the sphinx. Right now."
I stood up on that wobbly inflatable, heart pounding. For a second, I felt powerful—like I was conquering something bigger than myself. Then I jumped.
The *water* swallowed me whole. When I surfaced, dripping and breathless, everyone was cheering. Jake was laughing, but not in a mean way. In a way that made me feel... seen.
"That was epic," he said, offering me a hand to climb out.
Later, sitting on the pool edge with my phone forgotten beside me, I realized something. Sometimes you have to dive into the awkward moments. Sometimes the scariest things—like inflatable sphinxes and cute boys and being the center of attention—are exactly what you need to find your courage.
And maybe, just maybe, I'd finally stopped running from everything.
