The Sphinx at Sarah's Party

Maya pulled her beanie down lower, wishing she could disappear into the fabric. The party raged around her—junior year's first gathering, and already she felt like a fraud.

"Yo, whose turn is it?" Someone shouted from the basement. The HDMI cable lay abandoned on the floor, connecting nothing to everything.

Lightning cracked outside, the storm that'd been threatening all evening finally breaking loose. Half the kids cheered. Maya just felt like the electricity was mocking her.

Then she saw it in the corner: a plaster sphinx statue, probably from Sarah's Egypt phase last year. Its painted-on eyes seemed to watch everyone's carefully constructed personas.

"Truth or dare, but sphinx rules," Maya heard herself say. Why did she say that?

"What's sphinx rules?" Justin asked, actually looking at her for the first time tonight.

"Riddles," Maya said, surprising herself with confidence. "You have to answer the sphinx's question. Truthfully."

The game shifted. Sphinx rules became the thing nobody could stop talking about. Maya's riddles weren't even that good—okay, they were kinda cringe—but something about the raw honesty made everyone lean in.

"What's something you've never told anyone?" she asked when it was Justin's turn.

"I'm failing algebra," he admitted, and the room went quiet. "My parents think I'm getting a B."

"Same," someone whispered. Then: "Me too."

The lightning flashed again, and Maya pulled off her hat. Her hair, flattened from hours of hiding, sprung loose.

"I wish I was as cool as everyone thinks I am," she said.

Nobody laughed. Justin just passed her the controller. "Wanna play?"

The sphinx kept watching, but for the first time all night, Maya didn't mind being seen.
