The Sphinx at Sarah's Party

The thunderstorm outside matched the chaos in my head. My best friend since kindergarten, Maya, was across the room laughing with the popular crowd—those girls who acted like they were too cool for everything. I'd been **bearing** the weight of our fading friendship for months now, watching her drift away like dandelion seeds in wind.

Then I saw him. Tyler, leaning against the wall near the refreshment table, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else. His hair was messy, his clothes were thrift-store vintage, and he had that adorable awkwardness that made my stomach do that **lightning**-strike thing.

"Hey," I said, sliding up next to him like I belonged there. My voice came out squeaky. Great.

He jumped, then smiled. "Hey. You escaping too?"

"Something like that."

We ended up on the back porch, watching the rain. Tyler told me about his Egyptian grandmother and how she believed cats were sacred. That's when I met it—Bastet, his hairless **sphinx** cat, curled up on a porch cushion like a tiny, wrinkled alien.

"She's... interesting," I said, trying not to stare at her oversized ears.

Tyler laughed. "She looks like a naked mole rat, I know. But she's chill."

The conversation shifted from weird pets to weird parents, then to how we both felt like aliens in our high school ecosystem. For the first time all night, I wasn't worrying about Maya or who was watching us. I was just... present.

Then the moment came. Tyler leaned in, and I swear the air between us actually crackled. His lips were soft and tasted like Mountain Dew and possibility. My first kiss. My actual first kiss.

When we pulled apart, Maya was standing in the doorway, her expression unreadable. But instead of that sinking feeling I'd expected, I just felt... light.

"Tyler," I said, breaking eye contact with my former best friend, "I think this is the start of something good."

The storm raged on, but inside, something had shifted. Maybe endings are just beginnings in disguise.
