The Sphinx at Miller's Pool
Leo pulled his baseball cap lower, scanning the chaos of Tyler Miller's backyard pool party. The pool gleamed like a turquoise jewel, surrounded by kids who seemed to radiate confidence Leo couldn't find on his best days.
"Yo, Leo!" Marcus shouted, launching a deflated volleyball at Leo's chest. "Get in here, bro! The water's straight fire."
Leo's stomach did that familiar flippy thing whenever he had to be social. But Maya was in the pool, laughing with her hair slicked back like some kind of water goddess, and Leo had been crushing on her since seventh period English.
He took a breath and cannonballed in, surfacing to Maya's surprised smile.
"I didn't think you'd come," she said, splashing water at him.
"Yeah, well." Leo shrugged, water dripping from his baseball cap. "Here I am."
They swam to the pool's edge, where Maya's friend Chelsea was holding court.
"Okay, riddle time," Chelsea announced, grinning like she knew secrets. "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"
"Dude, that's literally from the sphinx," Leo blurted before he could stop himself. "Greek mythology? We learned it last week."
Everyone stared.
"Wait, you actually pay attention in Mr. Harrison's class?" Maya asked, eyes wide.
Leo felt his face burn. "I mean... it's interesting. The sphinx asked that riddle, and if you couldn't answer, she ate you. Pretty metal."
Maya's smile was different this time. Not polite. Real.
"That's actually really cool," she said softly. "I always thought mythology was boring until you explained it like that."
Something shifted in the pool's shimmering water. Maybe it was Maya's hand brushing his underwater, maybe it was finally feeling like himself instead of some awkward version of who he thought he should be.
"The answer's a person, by the way," Leo added, grinning now. "Crawls as a baby, walks as an adult, uses a cane when you're old."
"Nerd," Marcus yelled from the diving board, but he was smiling too.
Leo leaned back against the pool's edge, baseball cap floating somewhere in the blue, sphinx riddle solved, and thought that maybe, just maybe, high school wasn't completely impossible to figure out.
