The Sphinx at Midnight

Maya stood at the edge of Sarah's pool party, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The Wi-Fi was dead—some cable issue from the storm—and she felt completely exposed without her digital safety net.

"You gonna swim or just stand there looking aesthetic?" Sarah called, already three vodka shots in.

Maya forced a laugh. "Maybe later."

She slipped away to the backyard's edge, where she'd seen it earlier: a hairless cat curled behind the rosebushes. A sphinx cat, wrinkled and alien-looking, but somehow perfect. It watched her with ancient, knowing eyes.

"You too, huh?" Maya whispered. "Weird and out of place."

The cat—she called him Riddle—nudged her hand. Maya's chest loosened. Why was this easier than talking to people her own age?

"Thought you'd be out there living your best life?"

Maya jumped. Alex from AP Lit. The one with the intense eyes who always sat in the back.

"Hard pass," she said, gesturing to where Sarah's friends were playing chicken fights. "Not really my vibe."

Alex sat beside her, careful not to disturb Riddle. "Yeah. I peaked in middle school, apparently."

She laughed despite herself. "Same. Now I'm just... existing awkwardly."

Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating his sharp profile. Something electric zipped through her.

"Hey," Alex said suddenly. "Can I tell you something? I've been wanting to talk to you all year."

Her heart did that thing where it forgot how to beat.

"Yeah?"

"You're not as invisible as you think you are." He grinned, crooked and genuine. "I saved that cat, by the way. Found him behind the 7-Eleven. Thought he looked like a sphinx—mysterious and misunderstood. Kind of like someone else I know."

Maya's face burned. In the best way.

"Want to get out of here?" Alex stood, extending a hand. "I know this spot. We can watch the storm."

She took his hand, Riddle watching them with what looked like approval. Sometimes the best connections weren't made through cables at all. Sometimes, you just had to stop swimming against the current and let yourself be seen.
