The Sphinx at Match Point

Maya's hair wasn't cooperating. Again. The humidity had turned her normally sleek curls into a frizzy halo, and she adjusted her orange headband for the third time, fingers trembling.

"You're overthinking it," Li said, bouncing a padel ball against her racket. "You always overthink before matches."

"I'm not overthinking," Maya lied, checking her iPhone for the fifteenth time. No texts from Alex. No surprise Instagram stories either. Just nothing.

The padel tournament was in full swing—literally. Maya and Li had crushed their first two matches, but the semifinals against St. Mary's was different. That's where Alex played. That's where the real sphinx waited.

Everyone called Alexa Chen "the Sphinx" behind her back. She was gorgeous, mysteriously silent, and devastatingly good at padel. She'd barely spoken three words to Maya since seventh grade, yet somehow knew everything. Her hair always perfect, her game always flawless.

"She's just a person," Li said, reading Maya's mind. "A person with a killer backhand, sure, but still just flesh and blood."

"She's the Sphinx, Li. She doesn't do emotions. She just... exists and wins and looks perfect doing it."

Maya's phone buzzed. Alex. Finally.

"Hey! Sorry, practice ran late. You still at the tournament?"

Maya stared at the screen, heart doing this weird flutter thing it always did when he texted. The Sphinx herself was probably texting someone too. Someone cooler. Someone who didn't get frizzy hair before matches.

"Yeah, about to play St. Mary's. Nervous."

"You'll crush it. Your hair looks great btw. Saw your Insta story."

Maya's fingers froze. He'd noticed her hair. Alex, who she'd been lowkey crushing on since orientation, had noticed her hair. Suddenly the orange headband felt less like a mistake and more like armor.

"Thanks," she typed back, then pocketed her phone. The Sphinx could wait.

"Ready?" Li asked, raising an eyebrow.

Maya adjusted her headband one last time and stepped onto the court. "Born ready."

The Sphinx watched from across the net, unreadable as ever. But for the first time, Maya didn't feel like solving a riddle. She just felt like playing.
