The Sphinx at Match Point
Maya's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird as she stepped onto the padel court. The regional championships. Her racket grip felt slippery with sweat. Across the net, Chloe stood with her perfectly curated Instagram-friends, their matching uniforms mocking Maya's faded hand-me-down jersey.
The outdoor courts sat behind the school, right next to that weird statue everyone called the Sphinx—some art project from the nineties that looked like a cat had mid-life crisis during a thunderstorm. Its chipped wings and enigmatic smile had witnessed every embarrassing moment in Maya's high school career. Including the time she tripped during gym class freshman year.
Game point. The sky purpled with incoming storms.
"Nice hat, loser," Chloe sneered, gesturing at Maya's lucky baseball cap—embarrassingly bedazzled by her little sister, but Maya couldn't play without it. Her friends tittered.
Maya's face burned. She was so done with this hierarchy nonsense. Being new in town meant automatically starting at the bottom of the social food chain, and Chloe had made it her mission to keep Maya there.
The first serve sailed long. Second serve, Maya lunged—
A fox darted onto the court, a blur of russet fur from the nearby woods. Everyone froze. The fox paused, regarded them with liquid amber eyes, then snatched a ball near the fence and vanished like magic.
"Did that just—" someone started.
Then lightning cracked the sky. Illuminating everything. For a split second, Maya saw it: the Sphinx's smile seemed knowing. The fox's appearance felt like a sign, some cosmic eye-roll at how seriously they all took this.
Something shifted in Maya's chest. The pressure lifted. Who cared what Chloe thought? Who cared about fitting some mold? She was just a girl playing padel, and there was something kind of hilarious about that.
"Your serve," Maya said, grinning. And when the ball came, she didn't overthink. Didn't second-guess. She just moved. Her racket connected sweet with the ball—a perfect shot down the line. Chloe couldn't touch it.
Game point. Maya's point.
Later, under actual lightning, Maya walked home wearing her bedazzled hat like a crown. The Sphinx watched her go, and somewhere in the woods, the fox ran free. Some days, you just had to find your own lightning.
