The Sphinx at Lincoln High

Maya pressed her back against the cold hallway wall, heart hammering like she'd just chugged three espressos. She was doing it again—spying on Alex and his crew from behind a row of lockers. Pathetic? Maybe. Necessary? Definitely.

At lunch, she'd become a sphinx of silence, watching them laugh at some inside joke while she picked at her tray of mystery meat tater tots. The sphinx—that's what Mr. Harrison called her in English after she'd gone three weeks without speaking. "Riddle me this, Maya," he'd say. "Why does the smartest girl in class act like she's got nothing to say?"

She had plenty to say. She just couldn't make the words come out right. So she observed. She documented. She knew Alex's coffee order (oat milk, two pumps vanilla), that Sarah dyed her hair every three weeks like clockwork, and that perfect-looking Ethan played Animal Crossing until 2 AM on weeknights. She was basically a private investigator of the socially adequate.

"You know, watching from the shadows isn't actually creepy at all," someone said behind her.

Maya jumped like she'd touched a live wire. Spun around.

Ethan. The cute one. The one she'd definitely never spied on through his Instagram stories at midnight.

He smirked, leaning against the lockers all casual-like he didn't just catch her being a total weirdo. "You're like a fox, you know that? All sneaky and observant. I've noticed you noticing us."

Maya's face burned hotter than a pizza oven. "I wasn't—"

"It's cool." He slid a folded piece of paper into her hand. "We're doing a murder mystery thing this weekend. Alex thinks you'd be perfect for the spy role. Since you've got the observational skills down already."

He winked. A literal wink. Like, from a movie.

"Think about it, Maya Fox." He grinned. "That's gonna be your codename, by the way. I decided already."

He walked away, and Maya stood there frozen, paper in hand, completely messed up that this might actually be happening. That the sphinx was about to speak, the spy was about to get recruited, and the fox—well, the fox had just winked at her in the hallway and invited her into the pack.

First time in her life, Maya couldn't wait to see what happened next.
