The Sphinx at 3 AM

Mara hadn't slept properly in three weeks. Her boss—a man she privately called The Bear for his habit of bearing down on subordinates with terrifying swiftness—had dumped three major projects on her desk Friday afternoon, due Monday morning. She was running on caffeine and resentment, her colleagues shuffling through the office like zombies, eyes glazed from the endless grind.

The cat appeared at her window during another sleepless night. A scrawny thing with golden eyes that seemed to hold ancient secrets, watching her through the glass like a sphinx posing an unasked riddle. Mara opened the window. The cat jumped in, settling on her desk as if it owned the place.

She named him Sphinx.

The pattern repeated for weeks: Bear would dump impossible deadlines, Mara would work herself into a zombie-like trance, and Sphinx would appear at 3 AM, silent judgment in those amber eyes. Her girlfriend Lena left, citing Mara's emotional unavailability. "You're married to your job," she said, closing the door softly.

That was the night Sphinx brought her a dead mouse.

Mara stared at the small, broken thing on her desk, thinking about how The Bear would destroy her if she missed this deadline, about how she'd destroyed her relationship by never being present, about how she'd been running toward success her whole life only to find it felt like drowning.

She picked up the mouse with a paper towel, buried it in her small planter. Sphinx watched.

At 4 AM, Mara typed her resignation letter. Not dramatic, not blaming The Bear or the toxic culture that treated humans like disposable fuel. Just simple: I cannot do this anymore. I will not become what's expected of me.

Sphinx purred, the sound rumbling against her arm like a small engine restarting.

The next morning, Bear summoned her to his office, face like thunder. "This project—"

"It's done," she said. "And so am I."

The look on his face was worth the loss of her salary.

She walked out into actual daylight for the first time in months, Sphinx asleep in her carrier. She wasn't running anymore. She was just walking, and for the first time, the ground felt solid beneath her feet.
