The Sphinx and the Storm Spy

Lily loved the old stone pool at the bottom of her garden. It had been there forever, covered in moss and secrets. But she never knew its real secret until the night of the big storm.

That evening, as thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, Lily crept outside with her flashlight. She wanted to be a storm spy — someone who watches magic happen when no one else is looking. Rain pattered around her as she peered into the dark water.

Suddenly, lightning flashed! CRACK-BOOM!

And there, sitting on the mossy edge of the pool, was a sphinx.

But not a big, scary one. This sphinx was tiny, no bigger than a kitten, with soft golden fur and wise amber eyes. It had miniature wings that shimmered like moonlight.

"You're late," the sphinx said in a voice like twinkling bells. "I've been waiting for a storm spy for three hundred years."

Lily's mouth fell open. "You can talk?"

"Of course," the sphinx purred. "I'm Sapphire, guardian of the Wishing Pool. But I can't grant wishes alone. I need a curious friend to help me."

Sapphire explained that during lightning storms, the pool could show visions of anywhere in the world — but only if someone truly curious looked into it. The sphinx had been watching Lily for weeks, spying on her from behind the hydrangeas.

"I saw you rescue that butterfly," Sapphire said. "And share your sandwich with the new girl at school. You have a kind heart."

Lily blushed. "What do we do now?"

"Look into the pool together," Sapphire said. "And wish for something wonderful."

They huddled close as another flash of lightning illuminated the garden. The water began to glow like liquid starlight. Images swirled beneath the surface — tropical beaches, snowy mountains, children laughing in places Lily had never seen.

"What do you wish?" Sapphire whispered.

Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything — treasure, adventures, magic powers. But she looked at the lonely sphinx, who had waited three hundred years for a friend.

"I wish that Sapphire could come inside and have hot cocoa with me," Lily said. "And that we could be storm spies forever."

The pool flashed brighter than ever. When the light faded, Sapphire was still there — and now she could grow bigger or smaller whenever she wanted.

"That," said the sphinx, "is the best wish anyone has ever made."

And so, during every storm, you might see them if you look closely — a girl and her sphinx friend, spying on magic and sharing cocoa, wondering what amazing thing they'll discover next.

The best adventures, Lily learned, aren't the ones you find alone. They're the ones you share with friends — even if those friends have wings and riddles and have been waiting three hundred years just for you.
