The Sphinx and the Sleepy Walker
Lily loved exploring the magical forest behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she followed a ginger fox with a fluffy white-tipped tail down a winding path she'd never noticed before.
The fox stopped at the base of an enormous tree where a stone sphinx sat, its lion body resting while its wise face watched the clouds drift by.
"Hello, little explorer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to solve my riddle."
Lily's heart beat faster with excitement. "I love riddles!"
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "What has feet but cannot walk, a mouth but cannot speak, and always tells the truth without saying a word?"
Lily thought and thought. The fox sat beside her, flicking its tail encouragingly. Suddenly, she gasped. "A clock!"
"Correct!" The sphinx purred. "You may ask me one question."
"Why does the fox keep looking toward that cave?" Lily asked.
The sphinx smiled. "Inside lives a sleepy walker who has been in a magical slumber for one hundred years. He woke up alone and frightened. He's not scary—he's just lonely."
Lily remembered how lonely she felt when she started her new school. She marched toward the cave with the fox at her side.
Inside sat a green figure who looked like he might have been very handsome once, before his long magical sleep. He looked at Lily with wide, sad eyes.
"Hello," Lily said bravely. "I'm Lily. This is Fox."
The figure's face brightened. "I'm Zed. I... I think I was supposed to protect something important, but I can't remember what."
The sphinx appeared in the doorway. "You were the guardian of friendship, Zed. The magic chose you because you had the kindest heart."
Zed's eyes filled with tears of joy. "I remember! My job was to help lonely people find friends."
Lily beamed. "Then you can start with us!"
And that's how Lily, Fox, Zed, and the Sphinx became the best of friends, teaching everyone in the forest that sometimes the scariest-looking things are just the loneliest, and friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
