The Sphinx and the Sleepy Guardian

Lily loved exploring the magical forest behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she followed a sparkling blue butterfly deeper than she had ever gone before. The path led her to a magnificent golden sphinx who sat beside a pool of crystal-clear water.

"Hello, young traveler," the sphinx rumbled, her eyes sparkling like stars. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Magic Spring. But I cannot protect it alone."

Lily noticed a sleepy-looking zombie shuffling nearby. He had green skin, tattered clothes, and moved slowly, but his eyes were kind and gentle.

"This is Zed," Cleo explained. "He wasn't always a zombie. A grumpy wizard cast a spell on him years ago because Zed loved to nap in the sun instead of working. Now he guards this water with me, but he's so tired all the time."

Zed sighed. "I just want to be useful again. But I'm always sleepy."

Lily's heart went out to him. She had an idea. "Maybe the magic water can help!"

Cleo nodded thoughtfully. "Perhaps. But first, you must solve my riddle: What runs but has no feet, has a bed but never sleeps, and gives life to everything it touches?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the sparkling pool, at the gentle ripples on its surface. "Water!"

"Correct!" Cleo boomed happily. "You may use the spring's magic."

Lily cupped her hands and splashed the magical water onto Zed. His green skin turned rosy pink. His eyes brightened. He jumped up with energy!

"Thank you!" Zed cheered. "I'm me again!"

But Zed didn't run away. Instead, he smiled at Lily and Cleo. "I want to stay and help protect this water. Everyone deserves clean, fresh water to drink."

Lily learned something important that day: true friends help each other, even when things seem impossible. And sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures just need a little kindness and a splash of hope.

From then on, Lily visited her three friends every week—Cleo the wise sphinx, Zed the energetic guardian, and the magical water that brought them all together.
