The Sphinx and the Sleeping Garden
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden, but something strange happened when she stepped through the creaky wooden gate today. The beautiful roses were drooping, the sunflowers had curled their heads, and even the perky daisies looked sad.
"Oh dear," Grandma said, shaking her head. "The zombie flowers have gone back to sleep again."
"Zombie flowers?" Lily's eyes widened.
"Not scary ones, silly!" Grandma laughed. "These are magical flowers that wake up and go to sleep. They only bloom when someone solves the riddle of the tiny sphinx who lives in the garden."
Lily looked around and spotted a small stone statue near the fountain. But wait—it wasn't a statue! The little sphinx stretched, yawned, and blinked its golden eyes at her.
"I am Sphinx," it said in a voice like chimes. "Answer my riddle, and the garden shall wake. Fail, and the flowers sleep forever."
Lily took a deep breath. "I'm ready!"
"I wear a bright orange coat," Sphinx began, "but I'm not a tiger or fox. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Then she noticed a basket near the garden gate filled with round, orange fruits. "An orange!"
"Correct!" Sphinx purred. "Now the second riddle: I make you strong like Popeye says, but I'm not magic candy. What leafy green am I?"
Lily giggled. She remembered eating spinach salad with dinner. "Spinach!"
"Indeed!" Sphinx spread its tiny wings. "Now the final test: What makes dead things live again, but isn't magic or medicine?"
Lily looked around the garden. The zombie flowers looked almost alive, waiting... She thought about how Grandma sang to them, how she watered them with care, how she believed they would wake up.
"Love!" Lily shouted. "Love makes things live again!"
Sphinx smiled, and suddenly the garden exploded with color. The zombie flowers stretched their petals, the sunflowers lifted their faces, and roses bloomed so bright they seemed to glow.
"You did it!" Grandma hugged Lily. "The greatest magic is believing in something wonderful."
That night, Lily dreamed of sphinx riddles and magical gardens, knowing that love was the most powerful magic of all.
