The Sphinx and the Singing Fish
Lily discovered the hidden pond behind the old willow tree on the hottest day of summer. The water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight, calling her name with a gentle splash.
But something amazing waited in the center of the pond. A great stone sphinx sat on a lily pad island, its paws dipped in the cool water. Unlike the scary sphinxes in books, this one had kind eyes and a friendly smile.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I've been waiting seven hundred years for someone to find me."
Lily wasn't scared at all. "Why were you waiting?"
"For a friend," said the sphinx sadly. "I guard this magical pond, but it gets lonely."
Suddenly, the water rippled. An orange flash darted through the crystal-clear pond. It was a goldfish—but not like any goldfish from the pet store. This one shimmered like a tiny sunset, with scales that glowed orange and pink.
"That's Sunny!" the sphinx exclaimed. "She's the only fish who can sing magic songs."
Sunny popped her head above the water and began to hum. The most beautiful melody filled the air—like wind chimes and laughter mixed together. Orange sparkles danced across the water's surface.
Lily sat by the pond's edge, listening in wonder. "She's wonderful!"
"But she never sings for me," the sphinx sighed. "She only sings when someone new arrives."
Lily thought for a moment. "Maybe she's shy. Maybe she needs you to sing with her."
The sphinx's eyes widened. "I hadn't thought of that. I've been so busy guarding the pond, I forgot to make friends."
So Lily clapped her hands. "Sing together!"
The sphinx began to hum in a deep, warm tone. Sunny answered with her sparkly melody. Their voices wove together like sunlight through water, creating magic that made flowers bloom around the pond's edge.
"We're friends now," Sunny bubbled, popping above the surface. "Thank you, Lily!"
Lily visited them every day after that. She learned that sometimes the oldest, loneliest creatures just need someone to say hello—and that the best magic happens when friends sing together.
The sphinx, the goldfish, and the girl made the hidden pond the most magical place in the world, all because Lily wasn't afraid to say hello to someone different.
