The Sphinx and the Magic Screen

Lily's golden retriever, Buster, had been acting strange all morning. He kept pawing at the old oak tree in their backyard, barking at something Lily couldn't see. Being ten years old and full of curiosity, Lily knelt beside Buster and peered into the hollow between the twisted roots.

What she saw made her gasp. A tiny sphinx, no bigger than her hand, was curled up on a bed of moss. Its lion body was soft amber, its eagle wings shimmered like rainbows, and its human face held the wisdom of a thousand years.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, its voice like wind chimes. "I am Melinda, guardian of the Imagination Door. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

Buster wagged his tail furiously, as if he understood everything.

Melinda's eyes twinkled. "Your dog knows magic when he smells it. But I need your help, Lily. The Imagination Door is stuck, and children are forgetting how to dream."

Lily's heart raced with adventure. "How can I help?"

"That glowing thing in your pocket," Melinda said, nodding toward where Lily's iPhone peeked out. "Most humans use such devices to close their minds. But you... you use yours to create stories, don't you?"

Lily nodded. She loved writing tales about dragons and fairies.

"Then show me," Melinda said. "Use your magic screen to dream big, and I'll use my ancient magic to open the door again."

Lily pulled out her phone and opened her story app. As she typed, words began to glow and float into the air. Melinda chanted in a language older than the pyramids, and Buster howled a happy tune. Suddenly, the air shimmered, and thousands of golden butterflies burst forth, carrying dreams to children everywhere.

"Thank you," Melinda said, nuzzling Lily's hand. "You've remembered something important: magic isn't about what you have, but how you use it. Even a simple screen can become a portal to wonder when paired with an imagination."

Lily hugged Buster, who licked her face enthusiastically. She understood now that the best magic was the kind she carried inside her heart—all along.
