The Sphinx and the Magic Orange
Lila loved exploring the beach behind her grandmother's house. One afternoon, she wandered farther than usual and discovered a hidden cove she'd never seen before. Towering palm trees surrounded a sparkling lagoon, and in the center stood an ancient stone sphinx.
The sphinx wasn't like the ones in her books. This one had kind eyes and a gentle smile. As Lila approached, the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves.
"Young explorer, I have been waiting for someone brave and kind. For a thousand years, I have guarded this grove, but my magic grows weak. I need help."
"What kind of help?" Lila asked, her eyes wide.
The sphinx nodded toward a small orange tree growing beside her pedestal. Only one orange remained on its branches, glowing with an inner light.
"This magic orange must be eaten by someone pure of heart before sunset, or its power will fade forever. The orange grants one wish—to bring joy to someone who needs it most."
Lila's heart raced. A wish! She could wish for anything—toys, adventures, even a puppy! But then she thought about her grandmother, who had been feeling lonely since Grandpa passed away.
"I'll help," Lila said firmly.
The sphinx smiled. "First, you must solve my riddle: What has hands but cannot hold anything?"
Lila thought hard. A clock? No, that didn't seem right. Then she looked at the sphinx's wings and the surrounding palm trees swaying in the breeze.
"A clock!" she exclaimed. "The hands of a clock!"
"Correct," the sphinx said. "You may take the orange."
Lila plucked the glowing fruit. It was warm and smelled like sunshine. Instead of making a wish for herself, she ran back to her grandmother's house and shared the orange, dividing it into equal pieces.
"Grandma, make a wish," Lila said.
Her grandmother's eyes filled with tears as she felt the magic's warmth spread through her. "I wish for you to always have adventures, my brave granddaughter."
Suddenly, the house filled with golden light. When it faded, Lila discovered something magical—every book in her grandmother's library now contained living adventures she could enter whenever she wanted.
The sphinx appeared in the window, smiling. "You chose wisely. The greatest magic is always kindness."
From that day on, Lila and her grandmother shared countless adventures, never feeling lonely again. And sometimes, when the sun set just right, Lila could see the sphinx's silhouette against the palm trees, still watching over them with ancient, knowing eyes.
