The Sphinx and the Lightning Berry

Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house. One afternoon, she followed a glowing blue butterfly deeper than she had ever gone before. The trees grew taller and the shadows grew longer until she stumbled upon a magnificent creature resting on a stone pedestal.

It was a sphinx — but not like the ones in her storybooks. This sphinx had sparkling purple fur and wings that shimmered like rainbows. Her eyes were the kindest Lily had ever seen.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx said softly. "I am Cleo, and I have been waiting for someone brave enough to help me."

Lily's heart fluttered with excitement and a little bit of nervousness. "What do you need help with?"

Cleo sighed, and her rainbow wings drooped sadly. "For hundreds of years, I have guarded the Lightning Tree. Its berries make a special vitamin that keeps all the forest creatures healthy and strong. But yesterday, a terrible windstorm knocked down the tree! Now the squirrels are coughing, the birds are too tired to fly, and even the lightning bugs won't glow."

Lily gasped. She knew all about vitamins from her doctor. "We have to help them! What can I do?"

"The Lightning Tree only grows back when someone brave plants a new seed during a lightning storm," Cleo explained. "Tonight, there will be such a storm. Will you climb the mountain with me and plant the seed?"

Lily thought about how scary lightning could be. But then she thought about the coughing squirrels and the tired birds. She took a deep breath. "Yes! Let's do it together."

As night fell, Lily and Cleo climbed the highest mountain. Lightning flashed across the sky like bolts of golden ribbon. Lily held tight to Cleo's warm, furry paw.

At the very top, Cleo handed Lily a tiny glowing seed. "When the next lightning bolt strikes, you must plant it quickly. The lightning's magic will make it grow instantly!"

A massive bolt of lightning crackled toward them. Lily wasn't scared anymore — she was ready. She thrust the seed into the ground just as the lightning hit.

BOOM!

A magnificent tree burst from the earth, growing taller and taller until its branches brushed the clouds. Glowing berries appeared instantly, sparkling like tiny stars.

"You did it!" Cleo cheered, hugging Lily. "You saved the forest!"

Lily beamed with pride. The sphinx flew her back home, and when Lily woke up the next morning, her mom said, "You look especially healthy today! Did you take your vitamin?"

Lily smiled secretly. "Something like that, Mom. Something like that."

From that day on, whenever Lily saw lightning, she didn't feel scared. She knew it was just magic — the kind of magic that comes from helping friends and being brave when it matters most.
