The Sphinx and the Golden Bone
Lily's dog, Barnaby, was no ordinary golden retriever. Every morning at sunrise, he would trot to the garden fence and wag his tail at something Lily couldn't see.
One Tuesday, curiosity got the best of Lily. She followed Barnaby through a hidden gate in the old wooden fence—and gasped. Behind her backyard stretched a magical kingdom she'd never known existed!
In the center stood a magnificent sphinx made of warm sandstone, with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. But the sphinx looked sad.
"Hello, little ones," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I am Cleopatra, guardian of the Lost Garden. But I have lost my courage."
Barnaby trotted forward and nudged the sphinx's massive paw with his wet nose.
Cleopatra's eyes brightened. "Oh! Your dog carries the ancient magic! The Great Book says that only a true friend's love can restore a guardian's strength."
She reached into her stone mane and pulled out a glowing orange tablet. "This is the Sunshine Vitamin—the secret to bravery and joy. Long ago, I forgot to take it, and my courage faded away."
Barnaby barked happily and nudged the vitamin toward Cleopatra with his nose.
"He wants you to take it!" Lily cried.
Cleopatra swallowed the vitamin, and suddenly her stone body began to shimmer like gold dust. Her sad eyes sparkled with joy, and the entire Lost Garden burst into colorful bloom—flowers opening, fountains flowing, butterflies dancing.
"Thank you both!" Cleopatra boomed, now full of laughter. "You've taught me something important: even the bravest guardians sometimes need help, and true friends remind us to take care of ourselves."
She tapped Barnaby's head with her paw, and a star appeared on his golden fur. "And you, brave little dog—you may visit anytime. This garden is your second home."
Every day after school, Lily and Barnaby returned to play with their sphinx friend. And Cleopatra never forgot her Sunshine Vitamin again—especially when Barnaby was there to remind her.
For true magic, she discovered, wasn't in ancient spells or secret treasures. It was in friendship, kindness, and taking care of each other, one happy day at a time.
