The Sphinx and the Friendly Zombie

zombiesphinxgoldfish

Lily's pet goldfish, Finny, was no ordinary fish. While other goldfish swam in circles, Finny would follow Lily's finger across the glass and blow bubbles that spelled out her name. But one moonlit night, Finny did something extraordinary. He jumped right out of his bowl!

"Don't worry!" said Finny, his voice tiny but clear. "I need your help. The ancient Sphinx has forgotten her riddles, and without them, the magical garden will lose its wonder!"

Lily's eyes grew wide. A talking goldfish? A Sphinx who needed help? This was the adventure she'd always dreamed of!

"How can we help?" Lily asked, carefully placing Finny in a jar of water.

"You must solve three riddles to restore the Sphinx's magic," Finny explained. "But we must hurry before dawn!"

They crept out of the house and into the moonlit garden. At the center stood a magnificent stone Sphinx, her wings folded, her eyes closed. As they approached, the Sphinx stirred.

"Who comes to awaken the wisdom of ages?" she intoned.

Just then, a shuffling figure emerged from the shadows. It looked like a zombie - gray skin, messy clothes, and slow movements. Lily gasped, but the zombie smiled kindly.

"Don't be afraid," said the zombie. "I'm just Grumble. I was once the Sphinx's guard, but I've been stuck in this zombie-like sleep for centuries. Only the courage of a pure heart can awaken me."

Lily realized Grumble wasn't scary at all. He was just lonely and needed help. "We're here to solve the Sphinx's riddles!" she said bravely.

The Sphinx spoke her first riddle: "I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. "A map!" she exclaimed.

The Sphinx's eyes sparkled. Her second riddle: "I'm always hungry, I must always be fed. The finger I lick will soon turn red. What am I?"

Finny swam excitedly. "Fire!"

"Correct!" cried the Sphinx. "Now the final riddle: What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"

Lily smiled. "A mountain!"

The Sphinx spread her magnificent wings, and golden light burst forth. Grumble the zombie transformed back into his handsome guard form. "Thank you, brave child!" he said. "You proved that kindness and courage can break any curse."

Finny the goldfish glowed with magic. "And you taught us that even the smallest friends can have the biggest adventures!"

As the sun began to rise, Lily raced home with Finny. She tucked him back into his bowl, knowing that magic was real, friendship was powerful, and sometimes the most unexpected creatures make the best friends.
