The Space Between Us

The rooftop pool shimmered like liquid mercury under the midday sun, its surface broken only by the solitary figure cutting through the water with perfect, measured strokes. Elena stood at the edge, her robe hanging open, nursing the third gin and tonic she'd allowed herself since discovering the email three days ago.

From the balcony above, she watched him. That was the joke, wasn't it? She'd spent ten years building a career in corporate espionage, learning to read people, to anticipate their movements, to understand what they wanted before they knew it themselves. And yet somehow, she'd missed what was happening in her own marriage. Or maybe she hadn't missed it at all. Maybe she'd just been too cowardly to look.

James pulled himself from the pool, water streaming down his back. The woman from marketing—Sofia, with her ankle tattoo and laugh that sounded like bells—handed him a towel. Their fingers brushed. A moment too long. Elena felt it in her chest like a physical blow.

She pressed her palm against the warm glass of the balcony door, grounding herself. They'd come to this resort to reconnect. That's what James had called it. A second honeymoon, he'd said, pouring the wine with that careful, deliberate grace that had first made her fall in love with him. Now she wondered if he'd chosen this place because it was far from home, far from the life they'd built, far from the possibility of anyone who knew them as a couple.

Down by the pool, Sofia said something that made James throw his head back in genuine laughter. Elena had forgotten he could laugh like that. She traced the condensation on her glass, remembering how it felt to be the person who drew that sound from him. When had they become strangers who shared a bed?

Her phone buzzed—a message from her handler about the new assignment. "Target arrives Thursday. Position secure." The irony wasn't lost on her. She was a professional spy who couldn't see what was right in front of her face.

Elena finished her drink in one swallow, the ice rattling against her teeth. She watched Sofia touch James's arm, her palm lingering on his sun-warmed skin. He didn't pull away. That was the answer, wasn't it? Not the email, not the hidden texts, not the careful lies. It was simply that he didn't pull away.

She turned from the balcony, from the pool, from the life she'd thought she had. Some truths, she realized, were better discovered than confirmed.
