The Social Pyramid Scheme

I stood by the deep end, clutching my knees like a lifeline. Chloe's pool party was in full swing—literally. The popular crew had decided to build a human pyramid in the water, because apparently regular ground-based social hierarchies weren't enough for them.

"Marcus, you're on bottom!" Chloe shrieked, flicking her perfect hair. "Maya, you're up top!"

I adjusted my goggles and slid into the pool, becoming the invisible observer. A social spy, really. My job: navigate these waters without drawing attention to myself while gathering intel on who was hooking up with who and who'd secretly failed Algebra.

Swimming had always been my escape. Underwater, nobody could see you overthinking everything. Nobody could tell you were the new girl who still ate lunch in the library sometimes.

The pyramid formation wobbled dangerously. Tyler—Chloe's recent ex—was "accidentally" positioned at the very bottom, directly beneath Chloe and her new boyfriend, Kyle. The tension was thicker than the chlorine smell.

"Everyone stable?" Chloe called out. "One, two, THREE—"

The pyramid collapsed spectacularly. Tyler, clearly done being the foundation of someone else's drama, ducked underwater at the critical moment. Chloe and Kyle went down in a chaotic splash.

I resurfaced near the edge, trying not to laugh.

Tyler popped up next to me, water streaming down his face. "Worth it," he whispered, grinning.

"Totally," I said, surprised by my own confidence.

"You're really good at swimming," he said. "You were doing laps earlier, right?"

"Yeah. It's my thing."

"Cool." He paused. "You want to get out of here? There's this milkshake place..."

The social pyramid had crumbled, but something else was building. I nodded, pulling myself out of the pool.

Sometimes the best spy work happens when you finally stop watching from the sidelines.
