The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya stared at the pep rally poster like it was written in ancient hieroglyphics. "BULLS VS BEARS — THE RIVALRY RETURNS!" Apparently, this was supposed to mean something to her. Three weeks into freshman year, and she still felt like she was watching a different sport than everyone else.
The high school's social pyramid became crystal clear during lunch that day. Top tier: varsity jacket crew. Middle: the club kids and theater nerds. Bottom: everyone else desperately pretending not to care.
Then there was Maya, floating somewhere in the basement, still figuring out how to exist without looking like she was trying too hard (while definitely trying too hard).
Everything changed behind the gym during fifth period. Maya discovered a fox — an ACTUAL fox — tangled in the leftover homecoming streamers. The poor thing was freaking out, amber eyes wide with total fox panic.
"Hey, it's okay," Maya whispered, kneeling slowly. Her brain screamed that this was either the smartest or dumbest thing she'd ever done.
"Whoa." A voice behind her. Alex Chen, junior, varsity soccer, and way too cute for his own good. "Is that... a fox?"
Together they spent twenty minutes freeing the creature. Their fingers brushed against the debris, the fox's terrified breathing gradually calming as it finally bolted toward the woods, pausing once to glance back like, "You guys are alright."
"That just happened," Alex said, grinning. "You're basically a Disney princess now."
"Shut up," Maya laughed, but her heart did something embarrassing.
At Friday's game, the stands erupted when their bull mascot charged the field, followed by someone in a bear costume from the rival school. The crowd went wild.
Alex found her in the chaos. "Hey, friend, you coming to the after-party?"
The word hit different — not girlfriend, not some fake label. Just friend. Real.
"I don't do parties," she said, then realized she was absolutely going to this one.
"You and me both." His smile was everything. "But something tells me this one might not totally suck."
And maybe, just maybe, the social pyramid wasn't something you had to climb alone. Sometimes you just needed someone — and maybe a fox — to help you find your way up.
