The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya adjusted her dad's vintage trucker **hat** in the bathroom mirror, trying to channel the effortless cool she'd seen on TikTok. Tonight was Jackson's party—her first high school house party—and her nerves were doing jumping jacks.
"You got this," she whispered. "Just be normal. Normal people don't rehearse being normal in the bathroom mirror."
She arrived to find Jackson's living room transformed into a bizarre social experiment. Someone had arranged Solo cups in a literal **pyramid** on the kitchen island, and seniors were drinking from the top down like some weird ritual. Maya stood there, frozen, until sophomore Leo practically materialized beside her.
"Hey, you're in my English class. Maya, right?"
"Yeah. Hi."
"Welcome to the pyramid scheme," Leo deadpanned. "No, literally. Jackson convinced the freshmen that the cup arrangement determines the social hierarchy for the semester. It's literally a pyramid scheme."
Maya snorted. "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
"Right? But watch." A junior approached, grabbed a cup from the middle tier, and everyone cheered like he'd won an Olympic medal. "Status achieved."
Two hours later, the party shifted from awkward to absolute chaos. Someone suggested playing "zombie tag" in the backyard, which somehow devolved into thirty sleep-deprived teenagers stumbling around with outstretched arms, groaning "braaaaains" while genuinely exhausted from finals week.
"We ARE the **zombie** apocalypse," Maya observed, sprawled on the grass beside Leo, both of them pretending to be dead. "This is historically accurate."
"Bro, I literally can't even," Leo laughed. "My brain is so fried."
Then came the noise—a low rumble from the woods behind Jackson's fence.
Everyone froze. The zombie roleplayers dropped their arms. The pyramid pyramid crumbled as someone knocked into the kitchen island.
A massive black **bear** lumbered into the backyard, drawn by the smell of pizza boxes.
The silence lasted exactly three seconds before someone screamed and everyone stampeded toward the house. Maya grabbed Leo's hand and they bolted, sliding across the wet grass, cracking up hysterically because what even was their lives?
They ended up locked in the bathroom together, breathing hard, Maya's crooked hat smashed against the door.
"Well," Leo gasped between laughs, "that definitely upgraded from zombie tag to bear survival mode."
"Best first party ever?" Maya grinned, heart racing, everything terrifying and perfect all at once.
"Top tier," Leo said. "Definitely top of the pyramid."
