The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya's palms were sweating. Again. She wiped them on her jeans—third time in five minutes—and checked her phone for the fifth time. Nothing from Chloe.
"You coming?" Tyler called from the padel court. He was wearing those stupid vineyard vines shirts that every popular guy seemed to own. "Chloe said you'd be here."
"Yeah, just... tying my shoe." Maya bent down, heart hammering. This was it. Her chance to finally break into The Group. The ones who sat at the circular table in the cafeteria. The ones whose Instagram stories got 500 views while hers got, like, twelve.
She grabbed a racquet and joined them on the court. The game was chaos—Tyler and Chloe versus her and some sophomore whose name she kept forgetting. But Maya could feel the energy shifting. Every time she nailed a shot down the line, Tyler would nod. Chloe would actually look impressed.
"Not bad, new girl," Chloe said afterward, tossing her hair. "We're having a party Friday. You should come."
Maya's stomach did flips. "Yeah! Definitely."
But then came the twist. "Oh, and my friend does this... thing," Chloe lowered her voice. "Kind of like a business opportunity? Super low commitment. Basically you get three friends to join, they get three friends, it's like a pyramid but actually legit—"
Lightning flashed through Maya's brain. She'd seen this before. Her older sister had fallen for that stuff. Endless group chats about "entrepreneurship" and "financial freedom" that was really just recruiting more desperate teenagers.
Maya looked at Chloe's carefully neutral expression. At Tyler, scrolling on his phone. At the pyramid scheme disguised as friendship that they were all trapped in—social climbing masked as connection.
"Actually," Maya said, surprising herself, "I think I'm good."
Chloe's smile faltered. "Oh. Okay. Well... see you around."
Maya walked home, palms finally dry for the first time all day. Sometimes climbing the pyramid meant realizing it wasn't worth the view from the top.
