The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya stared at her sweating palms, mortified. Who gets nervous before a lunch table selection? It's just cafeteria food, not a presidential debate.
"You good?" Marcus asked, nudging her arm. "You look like you're about to bear witness to a crime."
"I'm fine," she lied, wiping her hands on her jeans. "Just... overthinking it."
The cafeteria's social hierarchy loomed before them like a pyramid scheme everyone bought into but nobody discussed. Top tier: varsity athletes and Instagram influencers. Bottom: anyone who dared to sit alone. Maya had spent freshman year desperately climbing invisible tiers, but something about sophomore year made her tired.
Marcus, oblivious to social construction zones, started toward an empty table near the trash bins. "Here's good—"
"No!" Maya grabbed his backpack strap. Too loud. People turned. Her face burned. "I mean, maybe we should..."
She caught sight of Jordan at the popular table, laughing with effortless grace. Last year, Maya would've texted Jordan seven times hoping for a response. Today? She watched Jordan lean away from something Chloe said, a flash of discomfort crossing her face.
Even the top of the pyramid had cracks.
"You know what?" Maya released Marcus's backpack. "Here is good."
They sat. Nobody pointed. Nobody whispered. The lunch lady handed her a slice of pizza that had seen better decades, and Marcus made a terrible joke that had Maya actually laughing.
Her phone buzzed—Jordan, from three tables away. "Wish I was sitting with you guys. Chloe's talking about her 'influence' again 🙄"
Maya typed back, "Table 42, near the trash. All the cool kids are here."
"Be there in 5."
When Jordan slid into the seat beside them, ignoring Chloe's stare from across the room, Maya's palms finally stopped sweating. Maybe growing up meant realizing everyone was faking confidence, and the real power move was just deciding where you wanted to sit.
