The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya's first week at Northwood High felt like climbing a pyramid built entirely of awkward moments and side-eyes. The social hierarchy was crystal clear: varsity athletes at the top, then the squad girls, then everyone else fighting over the scraps below.

The goldfish incident didn't help. Her bio partner, Jake, had won two carnival goldfish in a plastic bag and somehow convinced Maya to take one home. Now she was stuck with "Glitter" swimming in a bowl on her desk, its three-second memory span somehow outlasting her dignity.

"You're not seriously gonna name her Glitter, right?" Jake had asked, leaning back in his chair like he owned the classroom.

"Watch me bull my way through this assignment first, then we'll talk fish names." She'd meant it as a joke, but Jake just stared.

Friday's lunch disaster sealed her fate. Maya was finally sitting with the senior she'd been crushing on for weeks—Lena, who actually noticed her existence—when it happened. Spinach from her salad, wedged firmly in her teeth. Lena's eyes had flickered to her mouth, then away, and Maya had spent the rest of lunch covering her smile with her hand, destroying any chance at smooth conversation.

Now it was Monday, and Maya was determined to climb that social pyramid or die trying. She wore her lucky shirt, practiced casual greetings in the mirror, and even researched goldfish care on her phone during homeroom. Glitter would be proud.

When she found Lena at her locker, Maya took a breath. "Hey, about Friday..." She pointed to her own teeth, making herself laugh first. "Apparently spinach and I have a complicated relationship."

Lena's grin was genuine. "Dude, same happens to me with kale. It's a struggle."

The pyramid didn't exactly crumble, but something shifted. Maybe high school wasn't about reaching the top. Maybe it was about finding the weirdos who got spinach stuck in their teeth too.
