The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at her iPhone, thumb hovering over the post button. The cafeteria buzzed around her, but she was trapped in the digital pyramid scheme that ruled Lincoln High. At the base: the nobodies like her, scrolling through filtered lives. In the middle: the semi-cool kids who knew which hashtags to hijack. At the apex: Jordan and her clique, whose casual selfie could launch or crush reputations with a single double-tap.

"You gonna eat that, or just let it expire like your last crush's snap?" Her grandmother's voice echoed in Maya's memory. Abuela Lina had dropped off lunch — a Tupperware container of sliced papaya, sprinkled with lime and chili. Weirdly exotic. Totally un-Instagrammable.

"Eat it," Abuela had said. "Is good for growing. And for knowing what you really like, not just what everyone else likes."

Maya glanced at Jordan's table. They were all drinking those overpriced green smoothies, documenting their "healthy lifestyle" for their 500 followers. Meanwhile, Maya's papaya sat forgotten, looking suspiciously orange in a world of beige and avocado-green conformity.

"What's that?" Chloe, sitting across from her, pointed. "Looks like... alien guts?"

Maya almost shoved the container deeper into her backpack. Almost posted a selfie making a disgusted face. Almost played it safe.

Instead, she speared a slice and took a bite. Sweet, musky, with the lime's sharp kick and chili's slow burn. Nothing like the processed perfection in everyone's posts.

"It's papaya," Maya said, taking another bite. "My grandma grows it. It's actually kinda fire."

Chloe's eyes widened. "Can I try?"

Maybe the pyramid wasn't as solid as it looked. Maybe real life didn't need a filter.

"Sure," Maya said, sliding the container across the table. "But save me some."

Her iPhone buzzed. Jordan had posted another aesthetic smoothie pic. Maya didn't even look. She was busy sharing something real with someone who actually cared.
