The Social Pyramid Scheme
Pool parties at Lexi's house operated like a social pyramid, and I had always been somewhere near the bottom—maybe the foundation, holding everyone else up while they soaked up the sun.
That changed the day her Golden Retriever, Buster, decided I was his person.
I was already dreading it. The ick of social anxiety was real, and my brain was already spiraling through all the ways I could humiliate myself. Could I even still swim? It had been two years since I'd been in a pool without immediately regretting it.
"Yo! Maya!" called Jace, comfortably positioned at the pyramid's peak—senior class president, varsity swim team captain, all-around main character energy. "You getting in or what?"
Before I could answer, Buster came barreling out of nowhere, dripping wet and absolutely vibrating with chaotic energy. He didn't care about invisible social structures. He just launched himself at me, knocking me sideways onto a lounge chair.
Everyone stared. My face burned. This was it—the cringe compilation moment that would live in infamy.
But then Buster did something wild: he grabbed my phone in his mouth and bolted toward the pool.
"Buster, NO!" Lexi screamed.
I didn't think. I just moved, scrambling after him, fully expecting to watch my phone sink to its watery grave. Instead, Buster performed this majestic leap off the diving board, phone still clamped in his jaws, hitting the water with a cannonball splash that soaked everyone within a ten-foot radius—including Jace and his entire entourage.
The silence lasted exactly three seconds before everyone lost it. Even Jace was cracking up, his perfect hair plastered to his forehead, his phone (and everyone else's) saved from the splash zone by sheer luck.
"Your dog just took out the popular kids," I told Lexi, laughing as I fished my fortunately waterproof phone from Buster's mouth.
"Bro," Lexi said, shaking her head. "Buster just redistributed the pyramid."
Suddenly, I wasn't the awkward girl who couldn't swim anymore. I was the girl whose encounter with a chaos demon dog had taken down the social hierarchy—and honestly? That was way more legendary anyway.
