The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at the lunchroom's invisible **pyramid**—the seniors at top tables, freshmen scattered like confetti at the bottom. She sat somewhere in the middle, next to her former best **friend**, who was now deep in conversation with the new girl from California.

"Hey, Earth to Maya." Chloe waved a hand. "You gonna eat that **papaya**?"

Maya looked down at her lunch. Her mom, in her latest 'exotic fruit phase,' had packed it. "You can have it. I'll stick to this." She gestured at her sad container of **spinach**, which was already wilting in the humidity.

"Your mom's trying so hard," Chloe said, too kindly.

That's when Maya noticed it: a bright green piece of **spinach** wedged between her own front teeth. She'd been walking around like that ALL MORNING. Including during her presentation. Including when Jason from AP Chem had smiled at her.

**Lightning** couldn't have struck her with more precision. She'd spent three weeks overanalyzing why he'd looked away quickly. The answer wasn't that he wasn't interested. The answer was that she'd had food in her teeth.

"You're kidding," she groaned, covering her mouth.

Chloe laughed, but it wasn't mean. "Dude, we've all been there. Remember when I had chocolate all over my face after that party?"

Maya remembered. She'd been the one to tell Chloe then. They'd laughed about it for twenty minutes in the bathroom, reapplying mascara together.

Something shifted. The **pyramid** in the lunchroom seemed less important. The new girl was nice enough, but she didn't know about Chloe's obsession with vintage band tees or how she secretly watched "Gilmore Girls" reruns every Friday.

"Want to come over after school?" Maya found herself asking. "My mom bought more weird fruit. We can document the tragedy on TikTok."

Chloe's face lit up. "Only if I get to try the **papaya** first."

Maybe the social hierarchy was just a bunch of wilted **spinach** anyway—drama nobody needed when real friendship was sitting right there.
