The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya stared at the lunchroom ceiling, the familiar pyramid scheme of high school social hierarchy hanging over her like a neon sign. Seniors at the apex, juniors below, sophomores trailing, and freshmen scattered at the base like lost confetti. She sat with her usual crew—the Anime Club refugees—watching the popular crowd's table like it was reality TV.
"You're bearing witness to greatness," her best friend Leo whispered, nodding toward Jason, the senior whose smile could make teachers forget homework deadlines. Maya's stomach did that annoying flip-flop thing it always did when Jason was nearby.
She'd been secretly crushing on him since he'd defended her from a gym bully in September. Now it was December, and her crush had evolved into a full-blown emotional bear she couldn't seem to hibernate away.
"Check this out," Leo said, sliding a pamphlet across their table. VITAMIN C SUPPLEMENTS - BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE! The flyer claimed Vitamin C could cure everything from awkwardness to unrequited love.
"Seriously?" Maya raised an eyebrow. "You think orange juice is gonna fix my love life?"
"Hey, placebo effect is real. Besides, Jason's in the Health & Wellness Club. This is your in!"
Maya groaned but pocketed the flyer anyway. That afternoon, she found herself standing outside the Health & Wellness Club meeting room, clutching a juice box like it was a magical potion. Her heart raced like she'd drunk five energy shots.
Jason opened the door, his lacrosse jersey slightly rumpled. "Hey! You came."
She tried to form a coherent sentence, something cool and casual like "Yeah, wellness is important" or "I'm really into antioxidants." Instead: "Vitamin C!" she blurted, holding up her juice box like it was a peace offering.
Jason laughed—but not mean laughter. The kind that crinkled his eyes. "Totally. Vitamin C is MVP. Come sit, we're discussing stress management for finals."
Inside, Maya realized something unexpected. The social pyramid wasn't actually a pyramid at all. It was more like... circles. Overlapping, messy circles where anime fans and lacrosse players and everyone in between could intersect, if they were brave enough to step outside their assigned base.
"So," Jason said later, when they were both accidentally staying late to clean up, "want to study for history together? I'm kinda struggling with the French Revolution stuff."
Maya smiled, setting down her juice box. She'd never admit it to Leo, but sometimes even a ridiculous vitamin-fueled scheme could bear unexpected fruit.
