The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya dragged herself through the hallway like a **zombie**, surviving on three hours of sleep and three shots of espresso. Junior year was literally killing her, and the social hierarchy at Northwood High wasn't helping.

The **pyramid** became crystal clear during lunch period: the varsity athletes and cheerleaders at the top, then the AP kids and theater crowd in the middle, and everyone else scattered at the bottom. Maya existed somewhere near the base, trying to climb higher without selling her soul.

"You coming to Jake's party Friday?" asked Liam, sliding onto the bench beside her. "His parents have that **padel** court in the backyard. It's gonna be epic."

Maya snorted. "Right, because watching rich kids pretend to be athletic at a sport nobody actually cares about is my idea of fun. That's **bull**, Liam."

"Come on, it'll be chill," Liam persisted, that stubborn set to his jaw she knew too well. "There's gonna be a **water** slide into the pool. Plus, I heard Sydney might finally break up with Tyler."

Something shifted in Maya's chest. Sydney, the queen of the pyramid herself, possibly single? The temptation clawed at her—the chance to finally be seen, to matter in this glorified food chain of teenage existence.

But then she remembered last year's pool party, how she'd spent two hours fixing her hair only to have some random guy cannonball right next to her, ruining everything. She'd spent the rest of the night in the bathroom, scrolling through Instagram while everyone else lived their best lives outside.

"You know what?" Maya said, standing up with her tray. "I'm good. I'll pass on the pyramid scheme for now. Some of us have actual lives."

Liam stared at her like she'd grown a second head. But as Maya walked away, phone buzzing with notifications she could ignore, she realized something: maybe the real climb wasn't up the social ladder at all.

Maybe it was climbing out of the whole mess entirely.
